Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had let in 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or did there exist any cohesion holding it together to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him admitted that the board had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Speculation that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic on the pitch as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to tell if they are improving or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback

A single player kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this season. He was on last season at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, Lazio were advocating for him to remain there for another season. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad with no new signings.

He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Finding His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was still trying to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
